In 15 years, the number of employees who smoke dropped by nearly two-thirds, and the number of employees with high blood pressure dropped by more than half.

People feel cared about.” Church, who was diagnosed with cancer shortly after rolling out Point32Health’s wellness program, said that companies that support their employees during times of need can deepen their relationship with employees while living up to their corporate values. “The only way for us to fulfill our purpose as a company — helping people live healthier lives — is to take care of ourselves and to take care of each other.” 

Heightened Productivity 

When employees are healthy, they take fewer sick days, which improves productivity. The mental health component of these programs also aims to combat burnout and absenteeism — another productivity killer. “If your employees are healthy and happy, they’re going to come to work, they’re going to do better work and they’re going to be in a better position to grow with the company,” Bridgett Hart, vice president of employee experience at customer experience outsourcing firm ibex, told Built In. 

Employee wellness programs also help employees deal with the stress they’re experiencing in their personal lives, which can cause distractions that prevent employees from reaching their full potential at work. “The more an employee is thinking about some stress or challenge in their personal life, the less focused they can be on their work,” Kevin Robertson, chief revenue officer at HSA Bank, told Built In. “It’s beneficial to the employer to help eliminate some of those distractions.”

Employee wellness programs can also help organizations attract and retain talent. According to a survey by Robert Half, roughly 73 percent of workers consider a company’s employee wellness program when choosing their future employer. “In a competitive labor market, companies that promote comprehensive wellness initiatives stand out to top talent, serving as a powerful recruitment tool,” Sibyl McCarley, chief people officer at HireVue, told Built In. “Candidates are drawn to organizations that are committed to employee health and well-being, often viewing such benefits as essential to their employment decisions.” 

Meeting the Unique Needs of Employees 

When done right, employee wellness programs offer an opportunity to meet the workforce's diverse needs. Companies can use workforce analytics and employee surveys to learn what employees want from their wellness programs. Some software tools also use AI to personalize wellness benefits.

A sedentary life is the new smoking. It’s as deadly as insidious, creeping up on you when you’re not looking. Before you know it, you’re at your desk for hours, only to take breaks that involve scrolling on your phone or walking to the kitchen for a snack. Research shows that sitting for long periods can increase your risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even some cancers. 

This is true even for people who exercise regularly. The best way to offset the risk of extended sitting is to move more throughout the day. Wellness programs can help. They give employees the tools, resources, and motivation to break up their sitting time to promote better physical health.

According to the report, inflation, the economy, and money are significant sources of stress for 83%, 69%, and 66% of adults, respectively. Furthermore, money is a significant source of tension and fights in families for 55% of people. Financial wellness initiatives help alleviate financial stress and improve overall well-being. Startups and other young companies have already figured this one out. It's the older and bigger companies that have yet to climb on board. If your employee's role is independent of a specific range of hours in the day, why are you forcing them to work those hours? Let's face it: many positions must be beholden to the old 40-hour workweek standard. And if your employees are dealing with kids, sharing a vehicle, or scheduling college courses, there's a good chance that schedule is a pain in their necks. 

Relieve some of your team's daily stress and focus on employee wellness by allowing flexible working hours when appropriate. Permitting employees to shift their schedule by as little as one hour could make all the difference. Consider offering the choice of a four-day workweek. Which is the more productive employee – one rushing to work in a frazzled mess or arriving calm and ready to get to business?

With flexible working hours, why not offer your team the opportunity to work remotely? While it's not the right fit for every situation (or every employee), most organizations have at least some roles that can be handled remotely, making this an excellent option for an employee wellness program. A survey conducted by FlexJobs reported that 58% of participants agreed they would "absolutely" look for a new job if they couldn't continue remote work in their current role.

Dedicated employees are an asset to your company. But be careful encouraging your team – even indirectly – to skip lunch, forgo vacations, or make a habit of coming in early and staying late. 56% of employees cite lack of time as the major reason they don’t participate in wellness programs. Provide micro-learning wellness modules with bite-sized information or activities related to health and wellness that employees can complete in short bursts. This could include tips for quick stress-relief exercises, healthy snacks or food recipes, mini workouts, or brief mindfulness practices.

Encouraging employees to spend time outside the office may not promote engagement or wellness. However, fostering an environment of community involvement can transform your company's culture. Volunteering makes people feel good. When your employees have a chance to work for a cause they care about, you'll have a happier, more well-rounded team.
