4 Key Benefits of the Best Workout Apps for Women

Lady Working out - Best Free Workout Apps for Women

1. Expert Programming: The Best Apps for Women Offer Superior Flexibility Training Workouts

One of the top benefits of using a workout app is having access to expert programming. Although not all apps are created equal, the ones we’ve vetted for this roundup offer top-notch programming that provides expert-selected exercises, some degree of variety, progressive overload, and a method to track your progress.

Using an app helps you take the guesswork out of creating your program or have general anxiety about not knowing what to do for your workout on any given day.

2. Value: Free Workout Apps for Women Cost a Fraction of Personal Training

Workout apps offer an affordable way to get expert programming and guidance on your workouts, with many apps costing under $35 per month. In-person sessions can range from $50 to $150 per session, depending on where you live.

Personal trainers will charge you the same hourly rate to write personalized training programs. The training programs I write for clients are typically intended to last anywhere from four to eight weeks.

3. Convenience: Flexibility Training Apps Fit Your Schedule

We live in a modern world, and women are leading busy lives. Workout apps offer more convenience than scheduling in-person training or navigating group class schedules.

Plus, on average, women are responsible for more domestic labor than their male counterparts (on top of careers and family matters), making it even harder to squeeze in a workout.

Portable Fitness

An app can make things easier by providing a training program and instructor (or instructions) all in one place. Apps can also make it easy to work anywhere:

  • At home
  • Outdoors
  • In a gym

4. Accountability: Flexibility Training Apps Help You Stay on Track

While not all apps are the same, one benefit to a high-quality workout app is accountability. This may come in push notifications or scheduling reminders for your workouts. Depending on the app, it might also mean community forums or coach check-ins.

What to Consider Before Choosing a Workout App for Women

Ladies Working out - Best Free Workout Apps for Women

Personal Goals: Finding the Right App to Fit Your Needs

Why are you searching for the best workout app for women? Are you trying to build muscle? Do you have specific health issues? Are you trying to start new and healthy habits?

Asking yourself these questions before starting this journey will help establish clear goals. Once you have your goals, all that’s left is choosing the right app to help you get there.

Personal Restrictions: Know Your Limits

The best apps can all be personalized somehow, but depending on your situation, you may have a specific need that requires a deeper search.

It’s always important to check in with your doctor before starting any new fitness or dietary program. Be mindful of any past injuries, family history, or other physical limitations.

Cost: Don’t Break the Bank

For many of us, money is always an important consideration. Working a new monthly or annual bill into your budget requires some planning. Before you click subscribe, ensure you can squeeze in an extra expense.

Hopefully, this is a long-term investment in your physical fitness, and the only way to ensure it doesn’t become a financial burden is to plan. You may not need to spring for the most expensive personal training app, but you may want more than the best free workout app. The good news is that there are many options in between that can fit your needs without causing financial strain.

Progress Tracking: Find an App That Measures Your Success

Look for apps with robust progress-tracking tools and analytics. These will help you monitor your achievements and pace against your goals.

Wearable Integration: Sync With Your Fitness Tracker

If you currently use a fitness tracker, choose an app that can integrate with popular wearable devices.

Expert Guidance: Find a Reputable App

Look for an app that guides you through your workout routines, such as proper form and posture. Ensure the app collaborates with certified fitness professionals or nutritionists.

Progressive Overload: Choose a Strength Training App With Structure

If you’re looking for a strength training workout app, I urge you to pick one with progression in mind. Random daily workouts or training styles will give you random results. The principles of progressive overload ensure you progress your training output, but it doesn’t mean you have to lift heavier weights every time you train.

This means that a training program should revisit some of the same exercises for some time to help you improve your form and get stronger. Challenges should also be implemented to make the movement harder over time. Some examples are:

  • More repetitions
  • More sets
  • Less rest time
  • Greater range of motion

Type of Instruction: Choose Your Preferred Learning Style

The apps featured in this roundup will have one of two styles of instruction:

  • Instructor-led workouts
  • Brief video tutorials

Neither option is right or wrong, but you’ll want to know which one you prefer before signing up for a subscription.
